Gearen City Gym
If you haven't found this by now, then you must be pretty bad at Pokemon. Venam's gym is the big Venipede looking thing in the middle of the city. Enter and chat tot he Gym guide guy - he'll give you some useful tips.
Anyway Enter into the next room and Venam will greet you and run off. You'll only be able to Access Venam's room by unlocking the switches located in each of the rooms. Whilst you could technically avoid half the battles here, I suggest you actually do them to get a feel for what Badlands waste field effects are. The first switch is in the room you just entered, next to the toxic Waterfall.
There's also an Ability Capsule hidden on one of the rocks in the middle (Now that you have two, you can use Cheat Engine to duplicate them - I will write a guide on this later).
You can either go left or right now (you need to do both anyway), so pick which trainer you want to battle first.
- Left - Enthusiast Luca: Lv 14 Grimer, Lv 15 Venonat, Lv 15 Zubat
- Right - Hardcore Trainer Luca: Lv 15 Zubat, Lv 16 Golbat
The switch in the left room is on the far left. You can also battle the trainer in the middle of the field and pick up some Chinese Food as well.
- Hardcore Trainer Lenny: Lv 15 Ivysaur, Lv 16 Ekans
The room on the right is constructed similarly; A trainer, a switch and a hidden item.
- Punk Erik: Lv 15 Oddish, Lv 16 Gloom
Once you've activated all the switches, go and heal up and come back and jump on the teleporter pad on the top left of the first room. Walk through the doors and you'll find the familiar battle arena set up. Step on your rectangle to start the battle.
- Rocker Venam: Lv 13 Trubbish, Lv 14 Qwilfish, Lv 15 Whirlipede, Lv 14 Grimer, Lv 17 Seviper, Lv 15 Stunky
- Signature Move: Venam's Kiss - Physical Poison type attack. High Crit ratio.
- Field Effect - Venam's Field
- Poison type attacks are powered up
- Toxicboost ability is activated
- Non Poison type/Non Grounded Pokemon are hurt from the field
- All mud based attacks are powered up
- Strategy - Honestly not too challenging if you've leveled up your Pokemon like I told you to. I swept her with my Lv 19 Litleo (set up on the Whirlipede) using Headbutt/Ember.
After the battle, she'll ask if you're ready to join the team and save Melia, etc. You'll also get the PoisonHeart Badge, which will let you use Pokemon up to Lv 30. She left her TM at her house, which is pretty irresponsible of her. Anyway, exit the Gym and you'll be stopped by some scientist dude Dr. Jenkel, who has somehow created a time machine or something. He'll transport you back to his place, and tell you about his machine: which will basically let you "relive" certain events. This is useful for letting you recapture Shadow Pokemon you may have missed earlier (e.g. That Froakie Zetta had). You can only do it once though, so don't screw it up. If you come visit him later, he'll also have created a machine that will let you purify a shadow Pokemon, but for one time use only.
After you "relive" the Goldewood Forest Incident, he'll be astounded that the machine worked, and give you a Thunderstone:
Anyway, head over to Venam's house. Her mother will greet you, and give you TM 96 Nature Power, which is pretty useful in certain situations (considering the real shortage of quality TMs in this game).
Head upstairs and grab the Poison Barb off Venam's desk whilst you are here as well (forgot to screenshot soz).
Again, make sure you have at least $600, and head tot he East Railnet, which is relatively close to the Gym. Board the train and arrive at Route 2 - you'll arrive on the train platform:
The girl on the left will give you Fresh Waters, and if you head down the path on the right you'll find a Super Potion:
Proceed upwards and you'll find a woman stuck in a tree (this game has a fascination for this). When you approach it, dialogue will start, and the woman will jump down and steal your money and run away:
Before you go and chase her, grab the Rose Incense on the left:
Head upwards and come to a dead end with a rock in the way. It'll seem like you've finally cornered the girl, but surprise surprise, she has magical jumping abilities and is able to jump the ledge. You are pretty useless and can't jump for some reason. Anyway, you'll need Rock Smash, which will require you to go back to Gearen City to get, so board the train back by asking the Green Guy at the platform.
Make your way up to the section near the Pokemon Center. This is where Karrina's Gang hides out, and she owns the TM to Rock Smash. You'll have to battle 2 gang members to get to Karrina:
- Hardcore Trainer Joe: Lv 18 Raticate, Lv 18 Poochyena
- Enthusiast Marena: Lv 19 Monferno
Once you get to Karrina, she'll inform you only members of her gang are allowed access to Rock Smash, and you'll have to beat her in a battle to get it. Meet her at the basement arena of Chrisola Hotel where you did the Help Centre Challenges (Downstairs L room). Step on the other side of the room to initiate the battle:
Karrina is much harder than Venam (not really).
- Gang Leader Karrina: Lv 18 Vullaby, Lv 20 Audino, Lv 20 Grovyle, Lv 19 Venonat,
- Swept her with Lv 20 Litleo - Set up on her Vullaby.
After you defeat her, she'll give you TM94 Rock Smash and tell you to help her gang out. It's actually worth it though, and you should do it. Her gang base is the first building on the left of the Pokemon Centre. Speak to her and she'll inform you that they are planning on fighting an opposing gang tonight, and to meet her at Amethyst Cave (which is where you will be going to next anyway).
Once again, get your things together and head back over to Route 2 via the East Railnet.
